HowardTyler(FrankLovejoy)isafamilyman,livinginCalifornia,whocan'tseemtogetbyfinancially.Hemeetsupwithasmall-time,butcharismatic,hoodJerrySlocum(LloydBridges).Soon,SlocumconvincesTylertoparticipateingasstationrobberiestogetby.Later,theykidnapawealthymaninhopesofgettingahugeransom.ThingsgowrongwhenthemanismurderedbySlocumthenthrowninalake.Tylerreacheshislimitemotionally,andhebeginsdrinkingheavily.Hemeetsalonelywomanandconfessesthecrimewhiledrunk.Thewomanfleesandgoestothepolice.
