DeuxisarguablySchroeter’smostambitious,unsettlingandrepulsiveworktodate. Thedirectorcertainlywastesnotimeinalienatinghisaudience;fromthefirsttenminutesofthefilmitisclearthisisnotgoingtobeaneasyride. Havingseveralactorsplayingmultiplepartsonlyaddstothesenseofartificeandutterconfusion,whichisapityasthereismanifestlyalotofgreatactingtalentonshow–notleastofwhichisIsabelleHuppert. Thefilm’ssheerrelentlessgrotesquenessandself-indulgenceissoextreme,sounbridled,sostomach-churninglyprovocative,thatitishardtotakeanyofitseriously.
